Fats Waller is one of the fathers of modern jazz piano. As a teenager Waller learned to play harlem straid piano with the left hand skipping long distances from right to left and back. Many saw him as a clown or entertainer when in fact he was a virtuoso piano player with nearly unlimited abilities. He accompanied silent films, composed music for musicals and had a wild personal life. His comedic talent helped him in his captivating shows.
